Local villages
Frigiliana is just a few kilometers inland from Nerja, rising up into the hills. It dates back to pre-historic times, being inhabited by Romans and Arabics. This is a village of unparalleled beauty that the local people truely appreciate. They are often seen white washing their walls and cleaning their section of the narrow cobblestoned streets.
Frigiliana is the most honoured town within the Axarquia province. The most cherished being the 1982 1st place for the most beautiful place in all of Spain handed out by the tourist department of Spain.
All these honours endorse that Frigiliana stands alone in terms of beauty and charm. As you discover the streets of the village, stop and read some of the ceramic plaques describing its history.
The restaurants and bars of Frigiliana offer a wide range of local dishes along with dishes to suit the visitor.
Take time to sit outside one of the cafes and enjoy the magnificent views down to the coastline. Click here for more on Frigiliana

Marina del Este is a picturesque harbour protected by the bay of Punta de la Mona.
The marina is considered by many as the most beautiful in the mediterranean. You can enjoy a meal by the water side overlooking the moored yachts and feeding the fish in the marina. This truely is a most relaxing place.
Just a short walk from the marina is a beach with its own cocktail bar.

La Herradura is a little closer to Nerja and is the point where the N340 and the coastline comes closest.
It is the envy of Almunecar and one of the prettiest bays along the southern coast of Spain.
The village presents a typical Spanish aspect of white washed buildings climbing up the slopes from the beach.
Throughout the length of the bay you will find a large selection of beach bars and watersports clubs.
A great place for a day on the beach.

Competa is another of the famous white villages steeped in history. It is located 650 meters above sea level in the Sierra Almijara and has stunning views down to the sea. On a clear sunny day it is even possible to see Morrocco across the Mediterranean Sea.
A 16th century church dominates the village centre, which also plays host to a small but delightful plaza encased with bars and restaurants. You cannot help but feel the warmth and friendliness of the locals. Like all of the local villages, fiestas are held throughout the year.
The surrounding National Park of Tajeda offers spectacular walks through the pine forests and terraces of avacodos, olives and almonds.
Although Competa has moved with modern times, you can still see some of the older locals using mules for their transport.
